LAD Linear Anti-Strat Smart™ Diffuser

The LAD “Smart Diffuser” is a supply air temperature responsive, bi-directional outlet. The LAD automatically changes from a two slot horizontal throw to a single slot vertical throw when the heating cycle is initiated. The vertical heating feature will substantially reduce the time required for the heating cycle to be in operation. It will also substantially reduce the temperature of the air stratified at the ceiling level during the heating cycle, thus making return air temperature control a practical function during both cycles.

The application of the LAD SMART DIFFUSER over entry doors is highly recommended. Vertical warm air flow will greatly enhance the comfort level in the same fashion as an air wash. The advantage of automatic change-over, back to horizontal cooling, prevents the disadvantages of vertical cool air diffusion. The LAD uses a bi-metallic type thermostatic actuator because of the negligible operating force required to change the air flow from horizontal cooling to vertical heating.

The LAD supply air temperature responsive units can be applied to all perimeters or exterior spaces and are primarily used to solve the problems associated with VAV box/wall thermostat zone control or single unit zone control. The thermostat is in one room and the problems in all the other rooms connected by common duct work. If the heat gain in room “A” is increased, it will require more cooling volume. When the heating cycle is in operation the added heat gain will result in the need for a proportionally lower heating volume. That’s impossible with a single duct system and dumb diffusers, and that’s why more people want the thermostat in their own office. The problem is not the thermostat location; it’s the heating volume imbalance.

The LAD diffuser will allow a balanced volume to be adjusted independently for both the cooling and heating demand cycle. The heating cycle demand volume for room “A” may be 25% of that required in room “C” or less, or possibly more. The LAD units will allow you to manually adjust the volume so you can maintain the comfort level in a zone with more than one room.

The LAD linear SMART DIFFUSER adds the comfort benefits of baseboard radiation and the economic benefits of over head heating. When warm air is supplied, the LAD SMART DIFFUSER changes from a horizontal to a vertical throw, blanketing the outside wall and heat loss with warm air. The discharge opening is automatically reduced to increase the velocity while reducing the volume. That’s the opposite of a dumb diffuser and that’s why we call them SMART.

The LAD SMART DIFFUSER replaces all “dumb” diffusers used for heating applications because it increases the comfort levels and drastically reduces the heating energy costs. It either blows warm air vertically or it closes off. The volume of warm air is adjusted by moving the position of the straight side bar.

The design and operation of the LAD unit is based on the need to change a standard linear diffuser from a horizontal cool air flow, to a vertical, or reverse direction warm air flow.

Substantial savings can be achieved in initial and operating costs when the warm air volume can be reduced without sacrificing human comfort.
A considerable increase in human comfort can be acomplished when the diffusion outlet can be adjusted to the proper discharge opening size to accommodate both in the maximum cool air demand volume and a reduced maximum heating demand volume.
Typically, warm air will stratify at the ceiling level when horizontal diffusion cooling outlets are used for heating, even at 100% of the cooling air volume.

The LAD unit is actually two separate diffusers in one casing, a two slot horizontal throw in cooling, which automatically changes to a single slot vertical throw in heating.

The sweeping motion of the supply air path, most common in other such devices, during the change from the vertical to the horizontal flow position, has been eliminated by the unusual unit design.

A single blade changes the opening size of both slots, and is adjusted to the optimum maximum cool air discharge velocity. The blade pivot point is located to allow the blade to first close the horizontal flow rear opening; second, partially close the horizontal flow forward opening while partially opening the rear slot to a vertical flow position; and finally, stop at the adjusted discharge opening when warm air is supplied.

The LAD unit CANNOT be over-sized. Simple field adjustments will provide the proper discharge openings for both the cool air and the warm air.
